Johnny Cake Making
A QUEST Curated Experience
Johnny Cakes have been a part of our culture for decades. They were often prepared and shared amongst the community during jollifications. There are two types of Johnny cakes; baked and fried. The baked Johnny cakes were baked in rock ovens and oil drums, while the fried Johnny cakes were fried in a pot of oil on your self-made stove using coals, sticks and big rocks.
They are often served with butter, cheese and locally caught fried fish.
This experience will teach you the recipe as well as the techniques of making Johnny Cakes in the South Hill Community Rock Oven.
