The Voice Abroad… By Ruiz Kartoredjo

As a youth leader, I represented the Surinamese youth on behalf of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs at an international meeting in Antigua – 2015 CARICOM Youth Ministers Meeting. A meeting where youth leaders from across the Caribbean attended. Through networking with those present, I learned more about other countries in the Caribbean that are members of CARICOM . It was there that I met Clemvio Hodge, from Anguilla, who told me, in general, about his country.

In our conversation, I experienced the atmosphere. I am someone who is very fond of traveling. In particular, the beautiful beaches that can be found in the Caribbean. Clemvio gave me a magazine “What We Do In Anguilla” – he is the young and dynamic manager of this organization.

I flipped through the book and became very interested in the island. Information about from the moment you arrive, to the hotel and the beach. I also read about the fun, special and unique activities and of course, the great food. I brought the book to my country, Suriname, to my family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances to tell them about it – a Caribbean island which remains virtually unknown in the Surinamese community but has a lot to offer.

Thanks to Clemvio and his magazine “What We Do In Anguilla”, I’m curious about what the island has to offer in reality. Lots of success Clemvio. You’re doing a good job. In the future, I will definitely visit Anguilla. Maybe I’ll make this trip my honeymoon!

Toen Suriname en Anguilla elkaar ontmoette. (When Suriname meets Anguilla)

Namens het Ministerie van Sport- en Jeugdzaken mocht ik de Surinaamse jeugd vertegenwoordigen op een internationale bijeenkomst in Antigua – 2015 CARICOM Youth Ministers Meeting . Een bijeenkomst waar verschillende jeugdleiders uit het Caribische gebied aanwezig waren . Door te netwerken met de aanwezigen, leerde ik meer over de andere landen in het Caribisch gebied die lid zijn van de CARICOM. Daar ontmoette ik Clemvio Hodge, afkomstig uit Anguilla, die mij in het algemeen over zijn land vertelde .

In ons gesprek, voelde ik al de sfeer van Anguilla. Ik ben iemand die dol is op reizen. In het bijzonder, van de prachtige stranden die voorkomen in het Caribisch gebied. Clemvio gaf mij een tijdschrift ” Wat we doen in Anguilla ” – hij is de jonge en dynamische manager van deze organisatie .

Ik bladerde door het boek en raakte zeer geïnteresseerd in het eiland. Informatie over vanaf het moment dat je daar aankomt, tot naar het hotel en het strand . Ook las ik over de leuke, bijzondere en unieke activiteiten en natuurlijk het lekker eten. Ik bracht het boek naar Suriname om mijn familie , vrienden , collega’s en kennissen hierover te vertellen – een Caribisch eiland dat vrijwel onbekend in de Surinaamse gemeenschap, maar veel te bieden heeft.

Dankzij Clemvio en zijn tijdschrift “What We Do in Anguilla”, ben ik benieuwd naar wat het eiland in werkelijkheid te bieden heeft. Heel veel succes Clemvio. Je verricht goed werk. In de toekomst zal ik zeker Anguilla bezoeken. Misschien maak ik deze reis zelfs tot mijn honeymoon!

Over de auteur 

Ruiz Kartoredjo is student journalistiek aan de AHKCO Suriname (Academie voor Hoger Kunst en Cultuur Onderwijs). Hij is ook een CARICOM Youth Officer voor Suriname en de ondervoorzitter van de jongerenorganisatie Young Unity. Verder bekleed hij de functie van Data Entry Operator en Controleur bij een particulier bedrijf.
